Symptoms
Assume that you try to use the DeviceIoControl function together with the IOCTL_SFFDISK_DEVICE_PASSWORD control code to apply password protection toan SD card on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. In this situation, the SD card is not protected with a password. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Error IOCTL_SFFDISK_DEVICE_PASSWORD to <SD card drive>.
Error: 3221225474
Cause
This issue occurs because the Sffp_sd.sys module does not support the IOCTL_SFFDISK_DEVICE_PASSWORD control code.
Resolution
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Status
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
More Information
To enable password protection on SD cards, use the IOCTL_SFFDISK_DEVICE_COMMAND and SFFDISK_DEVICE_COMMAND_DATA control codes to send the CMD42 command sequence. For more information about this command sequence, view the "SD memory card part 1: physical layer specification" and "SD memory card part 3: security specification" documents.
If the SD card is already -protected with a password and locked, use the Device Console (DevCon) APIs to disable and then enable the SD card before you exit the control codes. Known issues
The following known issues occur after you install the hotfix:

The password protection feature does not work on computers that have a JMicron SD host controller installed, when the device ID of the host controller is 0x2381. Therefore, the password protection feature is disabled on JMicron SD host controllers that have device ID 0x2381.

The password protection feature does not work as expected under certain scenarios on computers that have certain host controllers installed. Please confirm with your hardware vendor that the host controller on your computer supports the DEVICE IOCTL interface for the CMD42 command sequence. For the password protection feature to function, the host controller must support the DEVICE IOCTL interface for the CMD42 command sequence.
