Missing Options on Tools Menu in Internet Explorer 5.x

SYMPTOMS

On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, the Internet Options, Show Related Links, and the MSN Messenger Service options may be missing.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if there is an incorrect setting in the registry.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, use the following steps:
  1. Start Registry Editor.
  2. Locate the NoFolderOptions value in the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
  3. Change the NoFolderOptions value to a DWORD value of 0 hexadecimal.
  4. Quit Registry Editor and restart the computer.
The Internet Options, Show Related Links, and MSN Messenger Service options on the Tools menu are restored.

The NoFolderOptions value may exist in more than one place in the registry. You can search the registry for every occurrence of the NoFolderOptions value as an appropriate troubleshooting step.
