Scheduled TURN Command May Not Work If No Outgoing Mail Is Queued

If the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service is configured to issue the TURN command, SMTP may not send an EHLO to the remote server if there is no outgoing mail. As a result, a TURN request is denied, and the SMTP service may stop responding (hang).

TURN is an SMTP client process that you can use to poll a remote SMTP host intermittently for mail that is destined for a specific domain. This process is common in small business scenarios and in situations in which users do not have a permanent connection to the Internet, but dial in to an Internet service provider (ISP) to download SMTP mail. When users are connected, the SMTP connector should send a TURN request to the remote server to cause it to respond and remove any SMTP mail that is requested by the TURN command from the queue.
