Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You rebuild a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services (SSAS 2008) or Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Analysis Services (SSAS 2008 R2) cube in Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010 (TFS 2010). Then, you perform a full or incremental synchronization in TFS 2010. In this scenario, SSAS 2008 or SSAS 2008 R2 crashes. Additionally, a dump file is generated, and an error message that resembles the following is logged in the Application log file:

Internal error: The parameter is not valid

Notes

  • This issue only occurs the first time that you perform the full or incremental synchronization in TFS 2010 after the cube is rebuilt.

  • To recover from this issue, you must restart the SSAS 2008 or SSAS 2008 R2 service.

Cause

This issue occurs because of an issue in Analysis Management Objects (AMO).

Note TFS 2010 uses AMO to execute administrative actions on an SSAS database.

You must apply a SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 2 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 2. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.

Note To resolve this issue in SSAS 2008, apply the cumulative update on a server that has SSAS 2008 installed.

Workaround

To work around this issue, restart SSAS 2008 or SSAS 2008 R2.  If the cube is not processed after you restart SSAS 2008 or SSAS 2008 R2, follow these steps to work around the issue:

  1. Use SQL Server Management Studio to process the cube.

  2. Run the synchronization in TFS 2010.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
