SYMPTOMS

When you try to move a mailbox between a computer that is running Exchange Server 5.5 and a computer that is running Exchange 2000 Server, you may receive the following error message:

Task Summary: Move Mailbox
Started: [Date and Time]
Finished: [Date and Time]
Results:
Error: Moving messages.
CN=[User], CN=[Container], DC=[Domain]
The MAPI call failed.
MAPI or an unspecified service provider.
ID no: 80004005-0000-00000000

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the mailbox size exceeds the storage limits (the Prohibit send and receive setting) on the destination Exchange Server computer. The following event is logged in the application event log on the destination server:

Event ID: 8528
Source: MSExchangeIS
Description:
The Mailbox for /o=[Organization]/ou=[Site]/cn=Recipients/cn=[User] has exceeded the maximum mailbox size. This mailbox cannot send or receive messages. Incoming messages to this mailbox are returned to sender. The mailbox owner should be notified about the condition of the mailbox as soon as possible.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use one of the two following methods:

Have the mailbox owner clean up the mailbox and reduce the mailbox size to meet the Prohibit send and receive setting limits. -or-
Increase the Prohibit send and receive setting for this specific user. To increase the Prohibit send and receive setting, use one of the following methods, as applicable:
- To change the prohibit send and receive setting in Exchange Server 5.5:
  1. Start the Microsoft Exchange Server Administrator program.
  2. In the global address list, find the mailbox on which you want to change the Prohibit send and receive setting.
  3. Click the mailbox, and then click Properties on the File menu.
  4. Click the Limits tab, and then type the value in the Prohibit send and receive box.
- To change the Prohibit send and receive setting in Active Directory:
  1. Start the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in in Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
  2. Find the user account that you want to change, and then right-click the object to open the properties.
  3. Click the Exchange General tab, and then click Storage Limits.
  4. Type the value in the Prohibit send and receive box.
