Summary

This article describes how to add a mail account or news account and how to modify an existing mail account or news account in Outlook Express.

More Information

To add a mail account or news account, you need the following information from your Internet service provider (ISP) or your local area network (LAN) administrator:

  • For a mail account, you need to know the name of the incoming Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) server.

  • For a mail account, you need to know the name of the outgoing Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) mail server, or the Internet Mail Access Protocol (IMAP) mail server.

  • For a news account, you need to know the name of the news server that you want to connect to and, if required, your account name and password.

How to Add an Account

  1. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.

  2. In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click the Add button.

  3. Click either Mail or News to open the Internet Connection Wizard, and then follow the instructions to establish a connection with a mail or news server.

Tips

  • You can create multiple mail or news accounts if you repeat the procedure in the How to Add an Account section.

  • You can get a free mail account from Hotmail, which uses Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) servers.

For more information about how to add a mail or news account, click Microsoft Outlook Express Help on the Help menu, type add a mail or news account in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topic.

How to Modify an Account

  1. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.

  2. Click the Mail or News tab, click the account that you want, and then click Properties.

  3. On the appropriate tabs, modify the settings that you want, and then click OK.

Note To change the e-mail address that people use to send you messages, contact your ISP or LAN administrator. If your e-mail address has changed, you also need to modify the e-mail address that is specified on the General tab, the logon name that is specified on the Server tab, and any other settings that may have changed. For example, your ISP or LAN administrator may have changed your password or mail server. For more information about the specific settings that need to be changed after your e-mail address has been changed, contact your ISP or LAN administrator.
