Symptoms

When you use RPC time-out registry entries or policies in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 or in an earlier version of Outlook, and then you upgrade to Outlook 2013 or Outlook 2010, you receive the following message in the taskbar:

Outlook is retrieving data from the Microsoft Exchange Server Server_Name.

Resolution

To resolve this issue for Outlook 2013, apply the following update:

Registry key information

Fix it for me

To enable the hotfix automatically, click the Fix it button or link. Then click Run in the File Download dialog box, and follow the steps in the Fix it wizard.


Notes

  • Install the hotfix appropriate for your version of Outlook that is described in the Resolution section before you run this Fix it solution.

  • This wizard may be in English only. However, the automatic fix also works for other language versions of Windows.

  • If you are not on the computer that has the problem, save the Fix it solution to a flash drive or a CD and then run it on the computer that has the problem.

  • The Fix it solution will create the registry data and set the value to the default time of 10 seconds (10000 milliseconds). For more information about determining how you should configure this and the steps to take to change this, see the "More Information" section.

Let me fix it myself

After you install the hotfix package, follow these steps to enable the hotfix:

  1. Start Registry Editor. To do this, use one of the following procedures, as appropriate for your version of Windows.

    • Windows 8: Press Windows Key + R to open a Run dialog box. Type regedit.exe and then press OK.

    • Windows 7: Click Start, type regedit.exe in the search box, and then press Enter.

  2. Locate and then select the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\x.0\OutlookNote The x.0 placeholder represents your version of Office (15.0 = Office 2013, 14.0 = Office 2010).

  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, click Key.

  4. Type RPC, and then press ENTER.

  5. Locate and then select the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\x.0\Outlook\RPC Note The x.0 placeholder represents your version of Office (15.0 = Office 2013, 14.0 = Office 2010).

  6. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.

  7. Type TimeToShowRPCMessage, and then press Enter.

  8. In the Details pane, right-click TimeToShowRPCMessage, and then click Modify.

  9. In the Value data box, type the number of milliseconds as you prefer, and then click OK.

    Note The default value is 10000, which equals 10 seconds. For more information about determining how you should configure this, see the "More Information" section.

  10. Exit Registry Editor.

More information

The TimeToShowRPCMessage DWORD Value controls how long, in milliseconds, in which Outlook will retrieve data from the server before the message in the Symptoms section appears. The default value is 10000 milliseconds, which equals 10 seconds. If you prefer the message to appear after more time has passed when an event occurs, you can set the value to a larger number such as 30000 for 30 seconds, or 60000 for 1 minute. This results in the message appearing less frequently because it will not appear when shorter events occur that are resolved after 15-20 seconds.

If you ran the Fix It solution in this article, the TimeToShowRPCMessage DWORD Value will be set to the default of 10000 milliseconds, which equals 10 seconds. If you prefer to change this, follow these steps:

  1. Start Registry Editor. To do this, use one of the following procedures, as appropriate for your version of Windows.

    • Windows 8: Press Windows Key + R to open a Run dialog box. Type regedit.exe and then press OK.

    • Windows 7: Click Start, type regedit.exe in the search box, and then press Enter.

  2. Locate and then select the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\x.0\Outlook\RPC\Note The x.0 placeholder represents your version of Office (15.0 = Office 2013, 14.0 = Office 2010).

  3. In the Details pane, right-click TimeToShowRPCMessage, and then click Modify.

  4. In the Value data box, type the number of milliseconds as you prefer, and then click OK.

  5. Exit Registry Editor.

You can also change this value for multiple users by creating and deploying a custom Group Policy.
