SUMMARY

This article outlines the enterprise Windows Phone requirements for IT professionals regarding Windows Phone Update and for IT developers creating applications for Windows Phone. It provides an overview of the Windows Phone update process, the role of the Zune software, and describes solutions for enterprise scenarios including:

  • Deploying the Zune software in an enterprise environment
  • Network requirements for Windows Phone Update (URL, port and proxies)
  • Troubleshooting Windows Phone Developer Registration

MORE INFORMATION

The following topics are covered in more detail below:

Role of the Zune software

The Zune software is required in both of the following Windows Phone scenarios:

  • Windows Phone Update: Microsoft periodically releases Windows Phone software updates to add new features and maximize the phone's performance. Windows Phone updates are delivered through Microsoft Update, the same system that Microsoft uses to update your computer. Windows Phone updates are installed by connecting the phone to a computer that is running the Zune software.
  • Windows Phone Developer Registration (Unlock): When you build Windows Phone applications, you can run your application on a Windows Phone by unlocking the device with the Windows Phone Developer Registration tool. This tool is installed automatically when you install the Windows Phone Developer Tools.

Note "Developer unlocking" a Windows Phone does not remove any existing network lock of the phone to a mobile operator’s network.

Deployment of the Zune Software within an Enterprise Environment

For information about how to deploy the Zune software to computers within an enterprise environment, the following article provides a walkthrough of the process:

Note The Zune software installation does not offer any method to customize, change or limit the features or functionalities of the Zune software, such as disabling Marketplace.

Internal hosting and managed deployment of Windows Phone updates

Windows Phone updates are installed by connecting the phone to a computer that is running the Zune software which then downloads the updates from the public Microsoft Update service.

There is currently no supported mechanism for IT professionals to internally manage the distribution of Windows Phone updates such as is possible with Windows Server Update Services for computers that are running the Windows operating system.

Required Firewall Ports & URLs

The Zune software requires certain ports and URLs to be accessible in order to perform tasks such as Windows Phone Update and Windows Phone developer unlock. Since Windows Phone updates are delivered through the public Microsoft Update service, the URL requirements for Windows Phone Update are based on the public Microsoft Update URLs. The following knowledgebase articles provide the details about these ports and URL requirements:

  • Ports: Port 80 (HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS) are required. For information about the port requirements of additional Zune features, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

935570  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935570/ ) Network ports that are used by the Zune software
  • URLs: For information about required URLs, see the list of Windows Update URLs provided in the workaround section of the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

885819  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885819/ ) You experience problems when you access the Windows Update Version 6 Web site through a server that is running ISA Server

Network Proxy Servers

Windows Phone connects to the Internet through the Zune software to perform tasks such as Windows Phone Update and Windows Phone developer unlock. If the computer that is running the Zune software uses a proxy server for internet access, Windows Phone may be unable to successfully complete these tasks.

Additionally, proxy implementations that require client authentication (username/password) are not supported by Windows Phone when you connect through the Zune software. This is known to affect both the Windows Phone update process and the Windows Phone Developer Registration tool’s ability to unlock a Windows Phone.

Below are examples of the typical errors that may be encountered when proxy issues are blocking Windows Phone in each scenario:

  • Windows Phone Update: When you check for Windows Phone updates, the Zune software may display an error message that has error codes 80072FA8 or 8072EFF stating:

Can’t check for updates right now. Please try again later.
  • Windows Phone Registration Tool: When you perform a developer unlock of a Windows Phone, the Windows Phone registration tool may display an error message that states:

Error logging into the developer portal. Please check your Windows Live ID and password and try again.

    Or:

Error logging into the developer portal. Please check your Internet connection and Windows Live credentials and try again.

Troubleshooting Windows Phone Update

For information about common problems encountered during the Windows Phone update process, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

2484484  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2484484/ ) Installing and troubleshooting problems during the software update for Windows Phone

Proxy Support for Windows Phone Emulator

The Windows Phone Emulator is a desktop application that emulates a physical Windows Phone device. It provides a virtualized environment in which you can develop, debug, and test Windows Phone applications. The MSDN article “Proxy Support for Windows Phone Emulator (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff754351(v=VS.92).aspx) ” describes proxy support in the Windows Phone Emulator for connecting to intranets and to the Internet.

Troubleshooting the Windows Phone Developer Registration tool

Additional troubleshooting information for the Windows Phone Developer Registration tool can be found in the Phone Registration Tool Troubleshooting (http://forums.create.msdn.com/forums/t/88883.aspx) thread from the Windows Phone developer forum.

Public or Home Network Workaround

If firewall and proxy issues continue to prevent Windows Phone Update or the Windows Phone Developer Registration tool from working successfully, using a computer that is connected to a "public" (bookstores, coffee shops, restaurants, etc.) or "home" network may resolve the issue.
