Older MPU-401 MIDI Card Not Detected During Windows 2000 Setup

If your computer contains an older MPU-401 MIDI card, it may not be detected when you install Windows 2000. If you try to manually install it, the MPU-401 driver does not appear in the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard, even though a standard MPU-401 driver (Msmpu401.sys) is included with Windows 2000.

You may be able to get the older MPU-401 MIDI card to work correctly by using the following steps.

NOTE: Although this method may work, it is not a supported method of installing devices. Use this method at your own risk.

1. Copy the Wdmaudio.inf file from the %SystemRoot%\Inf folder to a temporary folder.
2. Open the copied Wdmaudio.inf in a text editor (such as Notepad).
3. Disable the following line in the [ControlFlags] section of the file by inserting a semicolon (;) at the beginning of the line:
   ExcludeFromSelect = *
4. Save and then close the file.
5. Run the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard again. Add a Sound, Video and Game controller. Click Have Disk and specify the folder that contains the modified .inf file.

After you follow these steps, you can choose MPU-401 Compatible MIDI device from the list of devices.
