SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) from Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, icons may not appear on the desktop.

CAUSE

In Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition, before you upgraded to Windows Me, to locate the option Hide Icons when the desktop is viewed as a Web page, you would go to the Effects tab of the Display Properties window. Windows Me defaults to viewing the desktop as a Web page.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the desktop.
  2. Click Active Desktop.
  3. Click Show Desktop Icons.

STATUS

The behavior is by design. Windows Me turns on the Active Desktop by default during the installation.

MORE INFORMATION

The location for hiding or showing the desktop icons in Windows Millennium is not on the Effects tab of the Display Properties window. To access the new location, right-click the desktop, click Active Desktop, and then click Show Desktop Icons.
