SYMPTOMS

After you use the Update Device Driver Wizard to update the driver for your Hewlett Packard (HP) 8200 Universal Serial Bus (USB) CD-ROM drive to the latest HP driver, the CD-ROM drive does not appear, and it is not listed in My Computer or Windows Explorer as an available CD-ROM drive. You may also experience this behavior after you connect the HP 8200 USB CD-ROM drive to your computer and install the HP driver that is included with the CD-ROM drive.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if entries that refer to the previous driver file (Usbstor.sys) are still present in the registry.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
  2. Click the Device Manager tab, and then double-click the Universal Serial Bus controllers branch to expand it.
  3. Click the listing for the HP 8200 USB CD-ROM (HP USB CD-Writer Plus), and then click Remove.
  4. Click Refresh.
