Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7.

  • You share a file on the computer.

  • Multiple users try to open the shared file at the same time by using the Server Message Block (SMB) Version 2 protocol from different clients.

In this scenario, the shared file may be inaccessible for all users. You have to restart the computer that is sharing the file to recover from the issue.

Note Other shared files are not affected by the issue. Users are still able to access them when the issue occurs.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a race condition when a shared file is being opened by using the SMB Version 2 protocol by multiple users at the same time.
