USB hub stops working in Windows 7 if you click the mouse while the computer is entering sleep

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install hotfix package 978258 or service pack 1 (SP1) on a computer that is running Windows 7.
  • You enable the option in the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) that lets the USB mouse or USB keyboard wake the computer from sleep.
  • You click the USB mouse or press a key on the USB keyboard while the computer is entering sleep.
In this scenario, the computer successfully enters sleep. However, you cannot wake the computer from sleep by clicking the mouse or pressing a key on the USB keyboard. You must use the power button to wake the computer from sleep. After the computer wakes from sleep, the keyboard or any other USB device attached to the USB hub does not work.

Note If there are two host controllers for USB devices, then USB keyboards and USB mouse devices that are associated with the other host controller can still wake the computer from sleep.

Cause

This issue occurs because one of the USB root hub ports is resumed incorrectly when the USB hub is suspended. The expected behavior is that all the USB root hub ports are in the suspended state when the USB hub is suspended.

Resolution

Hotfix information
