If you are using an emulated LAN (ELAN) and your computer enters Hibernate mode, the computer may lose its connection to the network. When you check the status of the Local Area Connection item in the Network and Dial-up Connections folder, you see the following status message:
Network cable unplugged
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you use a network adapter driver that calls the NdisMDeInitializeDeviceInstance function during Suspend or Hibernate mode. The Asynchronous Transfer Mode Local Area Network Emulation (ATMLANE) driver is an example of a driver that calls this function.
RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the

How to Obtain the Latest Windows 2000 Service Pack
To work around this issue, manually disable and then re-enable the ELAN connection.
