Network Connection Lost After Resuming from Hibernate

SYMPTOMS

If you are using an emulated LAN (ELAN) and your computer enters Hibernate mode, the computer may lose its connection to the network.

When you check the status of the Local Area Connection item in the Network and Dial-up Connections folder, you see the following status message:

Network cable unplugged

If you run the Atmadm.exe utility with the -a switch, there may not be a network service access point (NSAP) address listed for the adapter installed in the computer, and the adapter may not have a registered interrupt with Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you use a network adapter driver that calls the NdisMDeInitializeDeviceInstance function during Suspend or Hibernate mode. The Asynchronous Transfer Mode Local Area Network Emulation (ATMLANE) driver is an example of a driver that calls this function.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

How to Obtain the Latest Windows 2000 Service Pack

To work around this issue, manually disable and then re-enable the ELAN connection.

This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.
