Memory Leak in Lsass.exe with Large Built-in Groups

SYMPTOMS

You might observe a memory leak in Lsass.exe private bytes with the System Monitor tool.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the built-in groups (such as the Administrators or Account Operators groups) have very many members. To verify this, use the information in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article to create a log with System Monitor:

The leak occurs in the Private Bytes counter for the Lsass process. You can also use the information in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article and Umdh.exe to verify that the function that is not freeing memory is in Samsrv.dll:

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
