Symptoms

Assume that you use the Conditional Forwarding feature on a DNS server that is running Windows Server 2008 to forward DNS queries for external domains. In this situation, the DNS server may not resolve the DNS queries for external domains.

Cause

This issue occurs because the DNS queries time out if the traffic from delegations is blocked by a firewall. The NS records from the delegations are cached by using a conditional forwarder. However, the DNS server does not forward the DNS queries for external domains if the cached NS records have not expired.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2). Additionally, you must have the DNS server role installed.

Registry information

To use the hotfix in this package, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.
