You receive a "Not enough memory to load graphics or embedded objects" error message when you open a Publisher publication

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open a Microsoft Publisher publication, you may receive the following error message:
Not enough memory to load graphics or embedded objects.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if any of the following conditions is true:
  • The Microsoft Windows resource buffers are full.
  • One or more of the graphics or embedded objects in the publication is damaged.
  • You are printing a high-resolution graphic with a printer that is configured to a 600 dot-per-inch (DPI) or higher output setting.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order that they are presented.

Clear the Windows Resource Buffers

To clear the Windows resource buffers, use the Disk Cleanup tool to remove the files that you do not need from the computer. The Disk Cleanup tool is available in Microsoft Windows XP, in Windows 2000, in Windows Millennium Edition (Me), and in Windows 98.

To use the Disk Cleanup tool, click Start, point to Programs or point to All Programs in Windows XP, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.

Delete the Damaged Graphics or Embedded Objects

To delete a damaged graphic or embedded object, folow these steps:
  1. Start Publisher, and then open your publication.
  2. When you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section of this article, click OK.
  3. When the publication opens, click a damaged graphic or embedded object, and then press the DELETE key.

    Repeat this step for each damaged graphic or embedded object in the publication.
  4. Save and then close the Publisher publication.

Lower the Resolution of the Image That You are Trying to Print

Try printing the image with a lower resolution (DPI setting).

Lower the Resolution Setting for the Printer.

Try lowering the resolution settings for the printer.

Note See your printer documentation to configure the resolution settings for your printer.
