Outlook for Mac 2011 cannot import an ANSI .pst file

When you try to import a .pst file into Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2011, you receive the following error:
The Data File could not be imported. This Outlook Data File is saved in ANSI format, which cannot be imported by Outlook for Mac.

In this case, the .pst file is saved in the 97-2002 format that Outlook for Mac 2011 does not support.


Open the .pst file in Microsoft Outlook 2010, and move the contents to a new .pst file that is saved in Unicode format. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open Outlook 2010, and make sure that the ANSI .pst file is attached to the Outlook client.
  2. Select the PST root in the Navigation Pane, as shown in the following figure (Screen shot for this step is listed below):

  3. Click File, click Options, and then select Advanced.
  4. Click Export, and then export to a .pst file. This creates a Unicode PST file that you can later import into Outlook for Mac 2011. During the process, you can select a removable storage device for the backup location. Then, you can take the removable storage device to the Mac to import the .pst file.
  5. Safely remove the storage device, and then connect it to your Mac.
  6. Open Outlook for Mac 2011, and import the .pst file. For more information about how to import .pst files, visit the following Microsoft website:
