Cannot Remotely Administer Network Load Balancing with Winmgmt.exe

SYMPTOMS

You may be unable to use the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) provider to remotely administer Windows 2000 Network Load Balancing (NLB). When you attempt to do so, you receive the following error message:

CAUSE

The NLB driver uses port 0x09C8 without binding the port to a socket. Therefore, the client that you are attempting to remotely control could be bound to the same port, and the outgoing data may be fed back to the client computer itself. When this occurs, some of the data is invalid as a remote-control response and causes the inability to start the WMI provider.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
