Stop 0x0000009F During Shutdown, Standby, or Restart

SYMPTOMS

When you try to shut down, restart, or put your computer on Standby, the computer stops with a 0x0000009F. The Stop 0x0000009F is a bugcheck that appears on the console when you shut down the computer.

Another symptom is a blinking cursor in the upper left corner of a black screen, followed by the message "NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error" when you try to exit Standby mode.

CAUSE

A product called Phone Access Lookup (PAL) from UUNET, an MCI WorldCom Company, installs two different drivers, depending on the product you are running. Check your drivers to verify that Cpmdrvr.sys or Cpmdriver.sys is running. These drivers are installed with a product from UUNET and the installed driver version is not ACPI-compliant.

RESOLUTION

Disable the Cpmdrvr.sys or Cpmdriver.sys driver to verify it is the problem. You can also uninstall the UUNET software or contact the vendor for a version that is compatible with Windows 2000.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server.
