Summary

This article includes information about the processes that may have to be excluded from antivirus scanning on computers running Team Foundation Server 2010, Team Foundation Server Proxy 2010, Team Foundation Server 2012 and Team Foundation Server Proxy 2012. It also provides links to Microsoft knowledge base articles that cover anti-virus exclusions that may be defined on servers running deployments of Microsoft SQL Server and SharePoint that have been integrated with Team Foundation Server.

More information

For better performance of source control and other operations of Team Foundation Server, we recommend excluding the IIS Worker Process or w3wp.exe in the list of Anti-Virus exclusions. Please note that this is not a product requirement for Team Foundation Server.

The IIS w3wp.exe process is typically located in C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\w3wp.exe.  You can also find the location of the process by:

1. Making a TFS web request such as connect to TFS using Team Explorer

2. On the Team Foundation Server application tier or Team Foundation Server proxy machine, open Task Manager and navigate to the Details tab

3. Find w3wp.exe in the list of items running

4. Right click and select Open file location
