FP2000: Security Command Is Not Available on Tools Menu

When you click the Tools menu in FrontPage 2000, the Security command is unavailable (dimmed).

This problem occurs if any of the following conditions is true:

• You have a disk-based web open. -or-
  
  
• Your web is hosted on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98 and running Microsoft Personal Web Server version 4. -or-
  
  
• The content root of the Internet Information Server (IIS) is on a FAT file system. -or-
  
  
• FrontPage permissions on the server are turned off (disabled).

To make the Security command available on the Tools menu, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: If You Have a Disk-based Web Open

Method 2: If Your Web Is Hosted on Microsoft Personal Web Server 4

If you are using Microsoft Personal Web Server 4 on Windows 98 or Windows 95, you do not have the option of using the Security features of FrontPage. You must publish your web to an Internet Information Server that is running on Microsoft Windows NT 4 or Microsoft Windows 2000 and that has its web content residing on an NTFS file system.

You can also publish this web to a Web server that is on the UNIX platform.

Method 3: If the Content Root of IIS Is on a FAT File System

Convert the file system to an NTFS file system.

WARNING: This method permanently converts your system from FAT to NTFS. For additional information about how to convert from FAT to NTFS, click the article numbers below to view the articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
To convert the file system to NTFS, follow these steps:

1. Uninstall the FrontPage Server Extensions:
   1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
   2. In the Named box, type Fpmmc.msc.
   3. Make sure that the Look In box lists your C:\ drive, and then click OK.
   4. When the file is found, double-click it to run the program.
      
      NOTE: This starts the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) for the FrontPage Server Extensions Snap-In. This is used to configure or administer your FrontPage Server Extensions.
   5. When you click the plus sign (+) next to each entry on the left side of the screen, you can see the entry Default Website.
   6. Right-click the Default Website entry, point to Tasks, and then click Remove Server Extensions.
   7. Follow the prompts to completely remove the FrontPage Server Extensions.
   8. Close the MMC, choosing to save any changes.
2. Convert the file system to NTFS:
   1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Command Prompt.
   2. At the command prompt, type the following command:
      convert disk: /fs:ntfs
      where disk is the location where your Web server content is stored. For example, if your Web server content is stored on drive D, type the following command:
      convert d: /fs:ntfs
   3. When the conversion is completed, type EXIT and press ENTER to return to Windows.
3. Install the FrontPage Server Extensions:
   1. Locate the Fpmmc.msc file that was used in step 1, and double-click it.
   2. When the MMC starts, locate the entry of your computer name.
   3. Right-click your computer name entry, point to New, and then click Web.
   4. This starts the FrontPage Server Extensions Wizard. Follow the directions in the wizard to complete the installation of the FrontPage Server Extensions.

Method 4: If FrontPage Permissions on the Server Are Turned Off

1. While you are still in the Microsoft Management Console after you install the FrontPage Server Extensions, right-click your computer name.
2. Click Properties.
3. Select the Don't Inherit Security Settings check box.
4. Clear the Manage Permissions Manually check box.
5. Clear the Don't Inherit Security Settings check box.
6. Click Apply and then click OK.
7. Close out of the MMC, and choose to save any changes.
