Symptoms

After you run the sysprep /generalize command more than two times on a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Server 2008 SP2, the system power state is changed unexpectedly.

Notes

  • This issue occurs after you run the sysprep /generalize command more than three times if SP2 was installed manually on the computer.

  • You can use the powercfg command on an administrative command prompt to check the system power state.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Powerprof.dll component assumes that the RegEnumKeyEx function will return sorted keys alphanumerically. However, when the power setting is updated to contain more than ten keys, the function does not return the keys alphanumerically. Therefore, the existing registry setting is overwritten incorrectly.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

To apply this hotfix, you must be running Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2).
