User Name Box Displays First 20 Characters of User Name in Logon Screen

SYMPTOMS

If you create a user name with more than 20 character in the Users tool in Control Panel, you see only the first 20 characters of the name when that user attempts to log on.

CAUSE

The maximum number of characters for the User Name box in Windows Millennium Edition (Me) is 20 characters.

RESOLUTION

Delete the user with the long user name, and then create a new user with a user name that is not longer than 20 characters:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Users.
  2. Click the user that you want to delete, and then click Delete.
  3. Click New User to create a new user.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
