Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have several mapped drives on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • You enable the Always available offline option on some mapped drives.

  • You put the computer to sleep.

  • You wake the computer from sleep.

In this scenario, you have to wait more than two minutes until you can access all the mapped drives. During this period, a red cross mark may appear on each mapped drive in Windows Explorer. Additionally, if you try to access the mapped drives, you may receive an error message that resembles one of the following:

An error occurred while reconnecting drive letter: to \\server\share\directory Microsoft Windows Network: The local device name is already in use. This connection has not been restored.

drive letter
: refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have moved to a different location.

An error occurred while reconnecting drive letter: to \\server\share\directory Microsoft Windows Network: The network location cannot be reached. For more information about network troubleshooting, see Windows Help. The connection has not been restored.

Cause

This issue occurs because the client-side caching (CSC) interface tries to reconnect to the source before the network is actually available. This behavior causes the SMB cache to enter a negative state. In this situation, the CSC interface tries to reconnect to the source on the next 2-minute retry interval.
