Computer May Hang When Hot-Swapping UDMA IDE Devices

SYMPTOMS

When you are using Ultra DMA (UDMA) IDE devices (such as IDE hard disks or CD-ROM drives), hot-swapping the devices may cause the new device not to be reprogrammed to use UDMA mode. Hot-swapping with a new device may cause the new device to use an I/O mode other than UDMA. This in turn may cause the computer to stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

When you hot-swap from one type of IDE device to another type, Windows may not handle the reconfiguration of the new device correctly. Therefore, when the computer enters a sleep state (S1 through S3), the _STM method is called with incorrect information. This in turn may cause the computer to hang upon reboot.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
