Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You develop an application that uses Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) API or a runtime-based protocol to retrieve information about Active Directory objects. For example, the application uses Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI), .NET System.DirectoryServices (S.DS), or System.DirectoryServices.Protocols (S.DS.P).
  • You run the application on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • The application runs multiple queries on different connections to the domain controllers in an Active Directory environment or to other LDAP servers. The queries require referral.
In this scenario, the application stops responding, and the query is not completed. Additionally, when you perform a network trace or collect an ETW log by following the steps that are described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, the log indicates that the application keeps sending the same query:
2221529 Event Tracing for LDAP in Windows Vista/2008

Cause

This issue occurs because of an internal notification issue in the LDAP client. When certain queries from the application require chasing a referral, the issue causes the referral response not to reach the application. Therefore, the application assumes that the server does not respond, and the application times out.

Resolution
