Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:

You create a Microsoft Visual C++ project in Microsoft Visual Studio 2008.

You change the Additional Manifest Files option to support Windows 7.
Note To do this in Visual Studio 2008, follow these steps:-
Open the project's Property Pages dialog box, expand the Manifest Tools node in the Configuration Properties pane, and then click Input and Output.

Add the following manifest file to the Additional Manifest Files option in the right-side pane:

You try to rebuild the project to merge the manifest file.
In this scenario, you receive the following warning message:
81010002: Unrecognized Element "compatibility" in namespace "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:compatibility.v1"
Cause
This issue occurs because the Mt.exe tool that is available in the Windows software development kit (SDK) does not recognize the compatibility element in the manifest file.
Resolution
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

Prerequisites
To apply this hotfix, you must have Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed.
Restart requirement
You do not have to restart the computer after you install the hotfix. We recommend that you close all Visual Studio 2008-related components before you install the hotfix.
File information
The global version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.
