An update that postpones the expiration date of Windows Developer Preview and of Windows Server Developer Preview is available

Important To continue using Windows Developer Preview or Windows Server Developer Preview, you must install this update before the expiration date. After the activation license expires, Windows Developer Preview and Windows Server Developer Preview will periodically restart. After you install this update, Windows automatically tries to reactivate after the restart until activation is successful.

Introduction

This article introduces an update that postpones the expiration date for Windows Developer Preview and for Windows Server Developer Preview. Currently, the expiration date for Windows Developer Preview is set to March 11, 2012, and the expiration date for Windows Server Developer Preview is set to April 8, 2012. After you install this update, both expiration dates are postponed to January 15, 2013.

After the activation license of Windows Developer Preview and of Windows Server Developer Preview expires, the following changes occur:
  • You receive the following message on the Activate Windows screen in Control Panel:
    The license for this pre-released version of Windows has expired. You’ll need to enter a new product key to activate Windows. Until you activate, Windows will restart every 1 hour, so you should back up your data.

    Install the latest version of Windows
  • You receive the following message on the Windows Activation screen:
    This pre-release version of Windows has expired. Your computer will restart every 2 hours and you might lose any unsaved data.
  • You receive the following message on the Personalize pane in Control Panel:
    You need to Activate Windows before you can personalize your PC
  • The following event is logged and displayed in Event Viewer:

    Log Name: System
    Source: Application Popup
    Event ID: 26
    Level: Information
    OpCode: Info

    Application popup: Windows – Windows Evaluation Notification: The evaluation period for this installation of Windows has expired. This system will shut down in 1 hour. To restore access to this installation of Windows, please upgrade this installation using a licensed distribution of this product.

Additionally, starting 14 days before the expiration date, you may receive the following notification on the desktop and in the Security section of Action Center:
This pre-release version of Windows will expire soon. Go to Windows Activation to purchase and install a released version of Windows.
