SYMPTOMS

Simple Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) functions, such as the Send To Mail Recipient option, the Send To Routing Recipient option, and any mail merges that use the Outlook Address Book, may not work if the following conditions exist:
  • You have installed the Microsoft Outlook 98 E-mail Security Update, released June 2000. -and-

  • You are using Outlook 98 on a Microsoft Windows 95-based computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem:
  • Upgrade from Outlook 98 to Outlook 2000. -or-

  • Upgrade from Windows 95 to Microsoft Windows 98 or later.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

If you use the Outlook 98 E-mail Security Update on a Windows 95-based computer, simple MAPI calls do not work without user intervention. Therefore, any other program that must be able to communicate with Outlook to send messages, or that uses Outlook addresses does not work without a user option to continue.

For example, you do not receive an Address Book warning and an option to continue if you attempt to mail merge from Microsoft Word by using Outlook contact information. You also receive the following error message when you attempt to use the Send To Routing Recipient option from another Microsoft Office program:
Your mail service does not support certain services needed for documenting routing.
Following this error message, there is no option to continue the document routing.
