NetBIOS Listen Does Not Work If Calling Name Is Set to Anything Other Than "*"

SYMPTOMS

If a NetBIOS program is written to listen on any names other than "*", the attempt to listen on the name does not work and returns code NRC_SYSTEM (64) - "A System error occurred."

This problem occurs because of a check by Netbt.sys that assumes that the buffer holding the NetBIOS name is in user-mode memory. However, if a named server is specified by using the NetBIOS emulator, the buffer is actually allocated in kernel memory and the NetBIOS listen call does not succeed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
