Web Folders Unavailable When You Use the "Disable Programs on Settings Menu" Policy

SYMPTOMS

When you are using the "Disable Programs on Settings menu" policy in Group Policy Objects (GPO) to prevent clients from viewing the Settings command on the Start menu, users cannot use Web folders in My Network Places, and may receive a "location cannot be found" error message.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because Web folders are stored as a registry shell item that is similar to the items that are normally found under the Settings command on the Start menu.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

NOTE: To use this hotfix, you must install it on all client computers that are using the policy.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, enable the following group policies:

Disable context menu for the taskbar
Remove Network + Dial-up Connections from settings menu
Disable Control Panel
Disable Deletion of Printers
Disable Addition of Printers

NOTE: The commands that remain under the Settings command on the Start menu are Printers, and users are not able to install or remove printers. Instead, users can only manage their print jobs.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
