Microsoft Outlook 98 Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) 1.21s E-mail Security
Update that was released on September 20, 2000. MORE INFORMATIONOverviewThe Outlook 98 CDO E-mail Security Update provides additional levels of protection against malicious e-mail messages. The CDO object model allows other programs to automatically send mail without user intervention and allows other programs to access Address Book information. This update restricts the way that other programs can use the CDO object model to send mail and access Address Book information. To download this update, view the following Microsoft Web site: http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/9798/Cdoup98.aspx

The CDO E-mail Security Update provides the same level of
security and functionality as the Outlook E-mail Security Update, except that
the CDO E-mail Security Update is for the CDO object model instead of the
Outlook object model.Because the Outlook 98 E-mail Security Update removes CDO from your computer, this update is primarily designed for those organizations or individuals who need to use CDO with the Outlook 98 E-mail Security Update. If you have installed the Outlook 98 E-mail Security Update and do not have another program or custom solution that requires CDO, you do not need to install this update. However, it is possible that other programs may have installed CDO on your computer. If you are not sure if CDO is installed on your computer, you can either install the CDO E-mail Security Update, or you can search your hard disk for the Cdo.dll file to determine if CDO is installed before you run the update. If you install the update and CDO is not installed on your computer, the Setup program installs CDO. After you install the CDO update, the Cdo.dll file is dated 6/19/00. Setup ConsiderationsThis section contains information that you should know before you install the CDO E-mail Security Update.PrerequisitesBefore you install the CDO E-mail Security Update, you must install the Outlook 98 E-mail Security Update. The CDO E-mail Security Update uses the same warning messages as the Outlook E-mail Security Update, and therefore requires that you install the Outlook E-mail Security Update first. The CDO E-mail Security Update Should Not Be Applied to ServersThe CDO E-mail Security Update is designed specifically for use on typical client or end-user computers. Microsoft recommends that you do not apply the update to Microsoft Exchange Server-side versions of the CDO 1.21 library because this may severely impact both standard and custom server programs, including Outlook Web Access.Developer InformationThere are many versions and variations of CDO, and this update applies to only CDO version 1.21 that is installed by Outlook 98. This security update is not designed for other versions of CDO that are primarily for server use.For additional information about how the CDO E-mail Security Update affects developers and programs that use the CDO object model, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 273882

Using CDO 1.21s in a ServiceIf you are developing a Windows service that uses CDO, security prompts will not be generated since CDO detects that it is running in a service and therefore does not display security prompts. | Article Translations
