SYMPTOMS

Assume that users in one domain are using resources in another domain in a Windows Server 2008 R2-based domain environment. You monitor the Netlogon performance counters on the resource domain controller for the trusted domain that contains the resources. Or, you monitor the Netlogon object on the resource server, and you monitor the performance instance for the domain controller of the primary domain. In this situation, the performance counters for the Netlogon Semaphore Holders and for the Netlogon Semaphore Waiters try to report negative values in the Performance Monitor. Therefore, an overflow value of 4,294,967,295 is displayed incorrectly in the Performance Monitor.

CAUSE

The issue occurs because of the way the security channel and corresponding performance counter instance are created after the Netlogon service is restarted. When the issue that is described in this article occurs, the counter values for the performance counters are initialized with the value -1 instead of 0.

RESOLUTION

Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
  • The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:
