Symptoms

When you select a whole worksheet and then try to sort the rows in Microsoft Excel 2010, you receive the following error message:

Excel cannot complete this task with available resources. Choose less data or close other applications.

Note This issue specifically occurs after you apply the update that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article:

2663830 MS12-030: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Excel could allow remote code execution: May 8, 2012

Resolution

To resolve this issue, apply the following hotfix package:

2598378 Description of the Excel 2010 hotfix package (excel.msp, graph.msp): June 26, 2012

When you change the height of a row that contains data in Excel 2010, and then you sort a column that contains data, the height change is not applied to the corresponding data.

Fix it for me



To fix this problem automatically, click the Fix it button or link. Then click Run in the File Download dialog box, and follow the steps in the Fix it wizard.



Notes

  • This wizard may be in English only. However, the automatic fix also works for other language versions of Windows.

  • If you are not on the computer that has the problem, save the Fix it solution to a flash drive or a CD and then run it on the computer that has the problem.

Let me fix it myself

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.

  2. Locate and then select the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Excel\Options

  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) value.

  4. Type EnableFullRowSort, and then press Enter.

  5. In the Details pane, right-click EnableFullRowSort, and then click Modify.

  6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

  7. Exit Registry Editor.
