Issue that this hotfix package fixes

When you try to open a custom encrypted workbook from a SharePoint document library, the workbook does not open, and you receive the following error message: 
The file could not be opened because it has been encrypted with software that is not installed on this computer.

Note This issue does not occur if Excel is running when you try to open the workbook from the SharePoint document library.

Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. After you install the hotfix package, follow these steps to enable the hotfix:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then select the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Excel\Options
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  4. Type UseShellExecuteToOpenFromSP, and then press Enter.
  5. In the Details pane, right-click UseShellExecuteToOpenFromSP, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  7. Exit Registry Editor.
