WINS Client Workstation [00h] Entry Remains Active on WINS Server After Client Shutdown

SYMPTOMS

When a Windows 2000-based WINS-enabled client starts, it registers various NetBIOS names and corresponding IP address directly with the Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) server. The (computer_name[00h]) entry that is registered by the Workstation service remains active in the WINS server database when the WINS-enabled client is shut down or restarted. This issue can prevent NetBIOS name changes and may cause other problems for WINS resolution.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

   Date        Time     Version        Size     File name

Note that this fix resolves the issue for the most part. However, after you apply this fix, the Windows 2000-based WINS client does not release the Workstation[00] name entry if the shutdown occurs within three minutes of the computer being powered on or restarted. The three minutes start when the logon dialog box appears.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
