SYMPTOMS

After uninstalling Microsoft Windows Media Player 7, version 7.0.0.1956, Adaptec Easy CD Creator version 4 may not work correctly.

CAUSE

This is caused by the removal of shared components during the Windows Media Player uninstall that are also used by Adaptec Easy CD creator version 4.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the appropriate method:

Before You Install Windows Media Player

Use one of the following methods:
  • Obtain and install a version of Easy CD Creator that is designed to work with a Windows 2000-based computer before you install Windows Media Player. Note that after you do so, you can create CDs in both Windows Media Player and Easy CD Creator. For additional information, visit the following Adaptec Web site:
    http://www.roxio.com/enu/support/ecdc/software_updates.html

  • Do not click to select the Adaptec CD-Burning Plug-in check box when you install Windows Media Player if it is available.
  • Uninstall Easy CD Creator prior to version 4.02 before you install Windows Media Player 7.
  • Download the latest version of Windows Media Player from the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb676148.aspx
NOTE: As of 8/18/2000, the latest version of Windows Media Player is version 7.0.0.1956.

After You Install Windows Media Player

NOTE: After you perform the following steps, you can use the "Copy to CD" feature in Windows Media Player, but you cannot use the CD-creation capabilities in Easy CD Creator prior to version 4.02. If you want to use the CD-creation capabilities in Easy CD Creator prior to version 4.02 instead of the "Copy to CD" feature in Windows Media Player, see the "You Want to Create CDs in Easy CD Creator prior to version 4.02 Instead of Windows Media Player" section later in this article.

To resolve this issue, use the appropriate method:

Method 1

If Windows 2000 is installed on a FAT or FAT32 partition, restart the computer with a startup disk in the floppy disk drive. At a command prompt, delete the %SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers\Cdr4vsd.sys file, and then restart your computer.

Method 2

Restart the computer with the Windows 2000 installation CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. Choose Repair a Windows 2000 installation, and then choose Recovery Console. In Recovery Console, delete the %SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers\Cdr4vsd.sys file, and then restart your computer. For additional information about Recovery Console, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
229716 Description of the Windows 2000 Recovery Console

Method 3

  1. Shut down and turn off your computer.
  2. Disconnect all CD drives.
  3. Restart your computer and delete the %SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers\Cdr4vsd.sys file.
  4. Shut down and turn off your computer.
  5. Reconnect your CD drives.
  6. Restart your computer.

You Want to Create CDs in Easy CD Creator prior to version 4.02 Instead of Windows Media Player

NOTE: If you enable the ability to create CDs in Easy CD Creator prior to version 4.02, the "Copy to CD" feature in Windows Media Player is disabled.

Restart your computer. When you see the "Starting Windows" message, press F8. Choose Last Known Good Configuration on the Windows 2000 Advanced Options menu, and then restart your computer.

NOTE: You may want to contact Adaptec to inquire about the availability of a version of Easy CD Creator that is designed to work with Windows 2000.
