Summary

On December 15, 2011, Microsoft announced a plan for Windows customers to automatically upgrade Internet Explorer to the latest version that is available for the installed operating system version. This upgrade program started in January for customers who have Automatic Updates turned on. In the same manner as the Internet Explorer 9 upgrade was handled in 2011, this program is starting slowly and will accelerate over time to include more computers.

This move is intended to help make the web more secure for everybody. An up-to-date browser provides better security, a better browsing experience, the best protection against malicious software, and an improved ability to keep Internet Explorer current by using timely automated updates.

If you have to retain earlier versions of Internet Explorer for testing or other purposes, you can apply a workaround so that Internet Explorer is not automatically upgraded. To apply this workaround auotmatically, go to the Resolution section. To work around this issue yourself, go to the Fix it myself section.

Resolution

To work around this issue automatically, click the Fix it button or link. Then, click Run in the File Download dialog box, and follow the steps in the Fix it wizard for the appropriate software.

To work around this issue yourself, follow these steps.

Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP SP3:

  1. Start Registry Editor.
  2. Locate and then select the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer \Setup\8.0
  3. Double-click the DoNotAllowIE80 registry entry, and then type 1 in the Value data box.

    Note If the DoNotAllowIE80 registry entry does not exist, you must create it. To do this, point to New on the Edit menu, click DWORD Value, type DoNotAllowIE80, and then press Enter.

Internet Explorer 9 or Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7 or on Windows Vista SP2

  1. Start Registry Editor.
  2. Locate and then select the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer \Setup\9.0
  3. Double-click the DoNotAllowIE90 registry entry, and then type 1 in the Value data box.

After Internet Explorer is automatically upgraded, the following versions of Internet Explorer are installed:
  • Windows Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3)
  • Windows Internet Explorer 9 on Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Internet Explorer 9 on Windows 7 or on Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Note If you are running one of the following versions of Windows, Internet Explorer will not be automatically upgraded: 
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2003
