SYMPTOMS

When you implement Distributed File System (DFS) on a Windows 2000-based server, system responsiveness may appear sluggish over time, and clients may report a gradual decrease in system performance. You may also receive "Out of Virtual Memory" error messages, and the computer may stop responding (hang) when the memory is completely exhausted.

If you track the amount of private bytes for Dfssvc.exe, you may note that over time it increases without ever decreasing. You can view this by using the Windows 2000 Performance snap-in by selecting the following counter to monitor:

Object: Process
Instance: dfssvc
Counter: Private Bytes

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
