Policy Restrictions on Drives Cause Unnecessary Error Message at Logon and in File Dialog Box

SYMPTOMS

When the "Prevent access to drives from My Computer" policy is applied, you receive the following error message during the logon process:
This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.
Also, when this policy is applied, you see the same error message twice if you click a drive in My Computer.

CAUSE

This behavior is caused by a problem in the Shell32.dll file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
