When you install Microsoft Office 2000, by default you also
install Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 (version 5.00.2314.1003). However,
Microsoft recently made Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 (version 5.50.4134.600)
available for installation.
This article explains the steps necessary
to include Internet Explorer 5.5 with the installation of Office 2000 on a
computer that is using one of the following operating systems:
- Microsoft Windows 98
- Microsoft Windows 95
- Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 4.0
- Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
If you are deploying Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 along with
Microsoft Office 2000 to a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000,
different steps are required.

OFF2000: How to Install Internet Explorer 5.5 with Office 2000 on Windows 2000
NOTE: If you attempt to install Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 as
part of your custom transform (.mst) by using step 15 in the Custom
Installation Wizard (CIW) to point to the location of Internet source files,
Internet Explorer 5.5 will
not be installed on computers that are running Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional.
Please follow these steps to install Internet Explorer 5.5
with Office 2000:
- Create an administrative installation for Office 2000. (See
the end of the "More Information" section for information about how to create
administrative installations.)
- On a computer, install Internet Explorer 5.5.
- On that same computer, start the Custom Installation Wizard
(CIW).
- On that same computer, install Microsoft Internet Explorer
Administrative Kit version 5.5 (IEAK), and upgrade the IEAK that is already
installed. You can download IEAK 5.5 from the following Microsoft Web site:
- In the Open the MSI File dialog box of the Custom Installation Wizard, locate and select Data1.msi from the root of your administrative installation. Click Next.
- Continue through the Custom Installation Wizard dialog
boxes until you get to the Customize IE 5 Installation Options
dialog box. Click Customize. The Microsoft Internet Explorer Customization Wizard (IEAK) is
started.
- In the File Locations dialog box of the Internet Explorer Customization Wizard, make
sure to specify a folder in the root of your Office administrative
installation. For example, you can use the following:
path\OfficeCD1\IE55_Cust
- When you get to the Automatic Version Synchronization dialog box of the Internet Explorer Customization Wizard, click Synchronize All.
- Complete the remaining dialog boxes in the Internet
Explorer Customization Wizard.
- When you click Finish in the Internet Explorer Customization Wizard, you are returned
to the Customize IE 5 Installation Options dialog box of the
Custom Installation Wizard.
- Make sure the path that is specified in the File
name and path of Internet Explorer 5 Setup box points to the folder
that you specified in the File Locations dialog box of the Internet Explorer Customization Wizard (step
7). For example, if you specified the following in the Internet Explorer
Customization Wizard File Locations dialog box:
path\OfficeCD1\IE55_Cust
then the File name and path of Internet
Explorer 5 Setup box should have:
.\IE55_Cust\EN\IE5Setup.exe
- Complete the remaining dialog boxes in the Custom
Installation Wizard.
- Write down the sample command line that is provided in the
last dialog box of the Custom Installation Wizard. You will use it to run
Office Setup.IMPORTANT: Although the "Always install with elevated privileges" system
policy from the Microsoft Office 2000 Resource Kit is in effect when you run
Setup for Office, Internet Explorer Setup fails if a user does not have local
administrative rights when the operating system is Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.
This, in turn, causes a failure in the Office Setup routine.
- Run Setup from your Office administrative installation,
using the transform that you created in the Custom Installation
Wizard.
