SYMPTOMS

If you have an embedded Java applet in a Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) formatted message, Outlook may quit or stop responding when you close the message item.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

The English-language version of this fix is for both the Outllib.dll and the Outllibr.dll files, and is available as a patch with the following file attributes or later. Apply this fix after you have installed Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1).

WORKAROUND

You can use one of the following two methods to work around this problem without applying the fix.

Method 1

After you open a message, let the embedded Java applet run to completion, and then close the message.

Method 2

Change the focus from the Java applet to the body of the message. If you have changed the focus to the Java applet (for example, if you click a control in the Java applet), click the body of the message to change the focus back to the message, and then close the mail item.
