Your Computer May Hang if You Install Service Pack 1 After Installing Windows 2000 High Encryption Pack

When you install Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows 2000, your computer may stop responding (hang) at the "Preparing Network Connections" portion of startup.

This problem can occur if you install the Windows 2000 High Encryption pack and you do not restart your computer prior to installing SP1.

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: To prevent this problem from occurring, restart your computer after you install the High Encryption pack, and then install Service Pack 1.

To work around this problem:

1. On another computer, expand the Lsasrv.dll file in the I386 folder included with Service Pack 1 to a floppy disk. For example, type expand -r d:\i386\lsasrv.dl_ a:\ at a command prompt, and then press ENTER.
2. Boot the computer that is experiencing this problem from the Windows 2000 installation media and then press F10 when you see the "Welcome to Setup" screen to start Recovery Console.For additional information about this, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

3. Copy the Lsasrv.dll file from the floppy disk to the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder. For example, type copy a:\lsasrv.dll c:\winnt\system32 at a command prompt, and then press ENTER.
4. Click Yes when you are prompted to overwrite the existing file, and then type exit to restart your computer.
5. At this point, you should be able to logon as usual and Service Pack 1 is correctly installed on your computer.
6. Reinstall the High Encryption pack, and then restart your computer.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
