Summary

The Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) feature of Microsoft Windows allows you to share a single Internet connection with multiple computers connected to a small office/home office (SOHO) network. When using Media Streaming (or other third party DLNA services) in Windows, it is recommended that you disable ICS. Because ICS modifies the routing of some networking protocols on the host PC, it can interfere with UPnP and DLNA services such as Media Streaming. This can cause functionality to stop working and prevent other Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, Xbox 360 clients, and other third party media players from streaming content from the Windows PC.

Third party DLNA servers will likely not work with Internet Connection Sharing and these scenarios are not supported by Microsoft. It may be possible to configure Media Streaming to function while ICS is enabled though this is also not recommended nor supported.

The following guide provides information on how to enable Media streaming on Windows. If followed, this guide should allow you to stream media to other DLNA devices including the Xbox 360. Note that in all instances the Internet Connection Sharing service is disabled.

Part 1: Turn on required services.

On the computer, click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK. An alphabetical list of services appears.
Using the table below (following the column that matches the version of Windows that the customer is using), find each of the services listed and make sure that those services are set properly. To change a service's setting, right-click the service, click Properties, select the correct option from the Startup type list, and then click OK.

Part 2: Check network and sharing settings. The network and sharing settings in Windows must be configured properly in order to share information with an Xbox 360 console. These settings vary, depending on the version of Windows that the customer is using.

For Windows 8

From the Windows 8 Start Menu, type "Control Panel" without the quotes and then press enter.
Click Network and Internet, and then click Network and Sharing Center.
Under View your active networks, make sure the network is set to Private network.
On the left hand pane select Change advanced sharing settings.
In the Advanced sharing settings dialog box, make sure that the following are set correctly:
- Network discovery is on.
- File and printer sharing is on.
- Public folder sharing is on.
- Media streaming is on.
- Password protected sharing is off.
- HomeGroup Connections: Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections.

For Windows 7

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Network and Internet, and then click Network and Sharing Center.
Under View your active networks, make sure the network is set to Home network.
Select Choose homegroup and sharing options, and then select Change advanced sharing settings.
In the Advanced sharing settings dialog box, make sure that the following are set correctly:
- Network discovery is on.
- File and printer sharing is on.
- Public folder sharing is on.
- Media streaming is on.
- Password protected sharing is off.
- HomeGroup Connections: Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections.

For Windows Vista

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Network and Internet, and then select Network and Sharing Center.
The network must be set to Private network, for sharing to work. If the network is set to Public network, click Customize to change this setting.
In the Customize dialog box, make sure that the following are set correctly:
- Network discovery is on.
- File sharing is on.
- Public folder sharing is on.
- Password protected sharing is off.
- Media sharing is on.

For Windows XP

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Network Connections.
Right-click the current network connection, then select Properties, and then make sure that File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is selected.
