Symptoms

Assume that you have a client computer that is running Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. When you try to upload files from Windows Explorer to a Microsoft SharePoint server by using the Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) component, the WebClient service stops running.

Cause

This issue occurs because the WebDAV service locks a directory. When a directory is locked, the internal data that is associated with the directory is treated as null values. When the WebClient service tries to release the lock by dereferencing an object, the issue occurs.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites
