Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) fix release.

Symptoms

Assume that you have Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 installed on a computer. When you try to alter a partition and run a statement against the partition at the same time, a deadlock occurs intermittently on a lock of a metadata resource. For example, a deadlock occurs intermittently when you run a SELECT or INSERT statement against the partition.

Note The deadlock occurs between an Sch-M lock in the ALTER PARTITION statement and an Sch-S lock in the other statement.

Cause

This issue occurs because SQL Server uses incorrect locks for the partition.
