Symptoms

Hidserv has caused an error in kernel32.dll
Hidserv will now close

If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer

Cause

The HID server is not correctly recognizing the Rapid Access III keyboard when the computer returns from a hibernation state.

Resolution

Windows Millennium Edition

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.

To resolve this problem, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;CNTACTMS
NOTE: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:
Date Time Version Size File name
   ----------------------------------------------------
   10/20/2000 05:33p 4.90.3002.0 17,680 Hidserv.exe

NOTE: This fix was originally released with the following time and date stamp:
Date Time Version Size File name
   ----------------------------------------------------
   08/17/2000 06:36p 4.90.3001.0 17,680 Hidserv.exe

The earlier version of the fix was discovered to have additional problems on versions of Windows Millennium Edition (Me) that use a double-byte character set (DCBS). These versions include Japanese and Chinese. The newer version of the fix addresses these additional problems and replaces the original version. If you have applied the earlier version of the fix on non-DCBS versions of Windows Me, you do not need to apply the newer version of the fix (although you can if you want to).

Windows 2000
