How To Create a Windows Me Startup Disk Manually

This article describes how to create a Windows Millennium Edition (Me) startup disk that you can use to troubleshoot your system, or restore your computer's hard disk. To create this disk, you need the following items:

• A Windows 98 startup disk
• A blank 3.5" disk

In addition, Windows Me must be installed; the \Windows\Command\Ebd folder must be present on the hard disk.

Windows Me does not have a command-line startup disk creation utility. As a result, you must create the Windows Me startup disk manually. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Start the computer using a Windows 98 startup disk.
2. Click to select Start Computer Without CD-ROM Support.
3. Type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:
   format a: /s
4. Insert the blank disk when prompted.
5. When the disk has finished formatting, with the newly formatted disk still in the drive, type the following commands, and then press ENTER (after each command):
   attrib -h -s -r *.*
   del *.*
   copy c:\windows\command\ebd\*.*
   NOTE: If Windows Me is installed in a different location, substitute the proper Windows path in the last command.
